ADVENTVS AVGVSTVS : Constantine and the London Mint

RIC VI London 133 ADVENTVS AVG

Hookmoor are giving a talk on the ADVENTVS coinage of Constantine the Great in York on the 8th September 2012. As part of the BANS (British Association of Numismatic Societies) annual autumn lecture course, we will be considering the reasons behind the issue of these series of coins from the London mint in the early fourth century.

There were four separate issues of the bronze ADVENTVS coins and it is unusual that this type was only issued at the London mint. It has been suggested that this might mean that it was a commemorative issue relating to the arrival of Constantine in London. We review the evidence for this in the light of new coin finds and suggest when this visit might have taken place.
